He put a mindset into the players and the school that they can overcome this and turn this program around. Gary brought enthusiasm to the team and made believers out of his players. He had calmness in the rough times giving the kids a reason not to panic if they just lost one game. In the 1995 season, Northwestern opened up the season beating Notre Dame at Notre Dame. Then the following they lost to a bad Miami (OH) team at home. That week Gary was distraught, but stayed calm and asked his team if they wanted to be the team that beat Notre Dame or the team that lost to Miami (OH). The reason he was such a good leader was because the kids believed in what Gary said. The team thought if they could trust him and have faith, they could do anything. Gary Barnett had many motivational techniques to get his players motivated. He thought you had to believe in yourself, to become successful. Gary made t-shirts that said Me to We. That was a way to tell his players that the only way they could win is if they believe in one another. One of his players wrote a paper on his motivational techniques. Northwestern has the lowest enrollment out of the whole Big Ten. They have an enrollment of only 7,500 kids. Where the University of Ohio State has about 31,000 kids. Gary didnt understand why kids didnt want to come, so it was his doing to change that. He did change that by telling his recruits that if you come to Northwestern that not only will you play football, but you will get a degree at a very good school. The obvious rationale for these price floors and ceilings is with respect to the fact that individuals within society, oftentimes the most vulnerable, will not be in danger of being unable to afford many of the common nutritional components of a healthy lifestyle. Conversely, these price floors and ceilings exist as a way of ensuring that producers will not choose to leave the market and a relatively static level of production capability will be exhibited; due to the fact that producers are assured the fact that they will not make below a given level of profit upon each gallon of milk produced. Firstly, with regards to the social welfare theory that is aptly represented within this particular case, the price ceiling that exists denotes the fact that the individual consumer within the economy will not be expected to pay more than a given amount for a gallon of milk. This has a powerful impact upon the way in which the domestic economy operates due to the fact that a litany of different products derive their ultimate price based upon the dairy market. Whereas milk itself is the primary complement, cheese, butter, protein, way, and a litany of other substances and food products are all derived from the primary milk that exists within the dairy market itself. As such, by creating a price ceiling, secondary and tertiary producers are also given a level of assurance that the cost of production for their individual commodities will not fluctuate greatly from one period of time to the next (Dairy Industry, 2004). This ultimately serves as a type of insurance through which different food producers can rely upon the fact that even though demand for products might change, the supply and price of the compound and goods which are required to produce a given food substance are likely to remain close to if not exactly the same price as they are within the current market. Ambrose Bierces Ise of Flashbacks and the Supernatural in his Short Stories AMBROSE BIERCE'S: USE OF FLASHBACKS AND THE SUPERNATURAL IN HIS SHORT STORIES Ambrose Bierce is known for using both flashbacks and the supernatural in his short stories "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and "The Death of Haplin Frayser." Bierce was born on June 24, 1842, in House Cave Creek, Meigs County, Ohio. He also disappeared in Mexico while acting as an observer of that country's civil war in January 1, 1914. Beirce's literary reputation is based primarily on his short stories about the Civil War and the supernatural. "Mancken considered him to be the "First writer of fiction ever to treat war realistically." Bierce grew up around the military, he entered a military academy in his teen years and then later on in his life was involved in war. He was involved in the U.S. Army, served with the Ninth Indiana Infantry Regiment as a drummer boy and Buell's Army of the Ohio. Many believe Bierce wrote about wars so realistically because he experienced war first hand. Many of Bierce's works are compared to Edgar Allan Poe because their stories share an attraction to death in its more bizarre forms. Bierce also worked as a novelist, journalist, poet, essayist, and a critic. Bierce has also written many other works which include The Devil's Dictionary, "The Secret of Macarger's Gulch" and "The Middle Toe of the Right Foot." In the short story "An Occurrance atOwl Creek Bridge" Bierce uses flashbacks of the soldiers in war to descibe what happened to them throught out the course of war. Many of the soldiers have scary flash backs. In the short story "An Occurrance at Owl Creek Bridge" Bierce describes exactly what the soldiers went through in battle and gives details of deaths that happened. Although Beirce's figures are not very well developed in any of his short stories, each story expresses a deep psychological trauma, one that ends in madness or loss. In war the characters become part of the military. Bierce either tells alot about the hero in his short stories or as little as he pleases. So the hero in "An Occurrance at Owl Creek Bridge" is a spy who is about to be hanged. In this short story many people take for granted the reason he is being hanged and what his beliefs are. That precise instance is when Dr. Tsun reflects on his great ancestor, Ts’ui Pen, and recalls the life of the man. More importantly, the story itself is already a flashback by virtue of its form, a signed statement, which implies that reading the ‘signed statement’ of Dr. Tsun is already a way of flashing back to his life before his death. Apparently, the flashback scene where Dr. Tsun recalls his memory of his great ancestor also indicates a ‘flashback’ within the main ‘flashback,’ which all the more signifies the postmodern character of the short story.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Chinua Achebe’s â€Å"Things Fall Apart† is also a literary work with a postmodern characteristic. This can be observed from the way in which Achebe preferred not to ‘romanticize’ the story of the Nigerians by portraying the history of the Ibo tribe as flourishing while ending when the colonizers came, and is contrasted by the ‘self-destruction’ of the story’s main character, Okokwo. In sum, the downfall of the Ibo tribe has also been brought about by the self-destruction of the society’s hero aside from the harms done by the invading colonizers. Scott Momaday’s The Way to Rainy Mountain is also an example of postmodern literature because readers can hardly identify whether it is the author who is narrating his life experiences or the characters in the story who are revealing their journeys in the so-called Rainy Mountain. Thus, readers may tend to interpret Momaday’s work as a combination of the stories of his life and his people, or readers may tend to interpret the same work as the story of the characters from the eyes of the author or the story of the author from the eyes of the characters.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Lastly, both Primo Levi’s â€Å"Two Flags† and â€Å"Survival in Auschwitz† indicate the blurring of the character and the elements of the story. For instance, the character in â€Å"Two Flags† mentions an â€Å"umpire† in a soccer game when in fact there is no umpire in a soccer game but a referee. Quite oddly, Levi also reveals how the main character in the story died upon seeing the two flags of the nations he loved and hated respectively swaying side-by-side. On the other hand, â€Å"Survival in Auschwitz† has a climax in the opening parts of the story which tells us that the story departs from the conventional placement of the climax in stories.
